Kokanee Tour of Utah 2025

I’ve seen several guys do a tour of the kokanee lakes in Utah that are easily fished from a boat. This leaves out several of the lakes and reservoirs where kokanee can be targeted, but anglers have to do it from the shore, or from a kayak. In total there are 15 lakes that have kokanee salmon in them currently in the state of Utah.

The Lost Kokanee Lakes of Utah

The state of Utah also tried and failed to plant kokanee in 5 other bodies of water in the state. I did a write up on the history of kokanee in Utah on the 100 year anniversary of kokanee coming to the state a couple years ago. The list below are the failed experiments for kokanee in the state though. I should also note, Starvation and Upper Enterprise Reservoir are going to be moving to this list as well in the next few years.

My 2025 Kokanee Tour of Utah

My plan is to do the most thorough kokanee tour of Utah that has ever been done. I plan to hit not only every lake that has kokanee in it, but also I plan to fish the 5 lakes that were the failed experiences, for a total of 20 lakes. I plan to fish some from my boat, some from the shore, some through the ice, and some from a kayak.

Ice fishing lakes:

• Strawberry Reservoir
• Scofield Reservoir
• Fish Lake
• Electric Lake

I understand that aside from perhaps Electric Lake, kokanee in Utah are extremely hard to target through the ice. I’m not saying Electric Lake will be a cake walk, but I’ve seen more folks have success targeting them there through the ice than anywhere else.

Boating Lakes:

• Starvation
• Strawberry
• Flaming Gorge
• Jordanelle Reservoir
• Bear Lake
• Porcupine Reservoir
• East Canyon Reservoir
• Rockport Reservoir

Trolling for kokanee seems to be the most effective way to target them in Utah. There’s also a 5-6 month window of decent kokanee fishing weather when I’ll be able to take the boat out to hit these lakes.

Fishing From Shore:

• Deer Creek
• Blind Lake
• Pelican Lake
• Panguitch Lake

Targeting kokanee from shore is hard. There’s no other way around that. That’s part of the reason why most of the lakes on this list are the lost kokanee lakes, lakes without any more kokanee in them, so I’ll be targeting other species. The exception for this is Blind Lake. Blind Lake is actually in the Boulder Mountains, and requires a hike in to get to the lake. The state is hoping to create a fishery where kokanee can be targeted from the shore, and this will be the 3rd year since stocking kokanee, making it high time for someone to go give them a try.
